Biography Bitbasic

Bitbasic performing liveLondon-based Bitbasic aka. Simon Haycock, has released several EPs and albums through other netlabels such as Monotonik and Testpilot Music before; Bitbasic started his musical adventures at the age of 15. Playing out with a laptop and 40h monome, Simon uses his self-written software ‘dj64′ which modells a mixer and two turntables virtually.

As the music magazine Drowned in Sound has coined Bitbasic’s virtuosity “in nodding to the likes of Nathan Fake, Four Tet and Paul White among others, Haycock is [...]bringing together equally excellent and equally diverse genres and wedding them into a sound distinctly his own.”

Bitbasic has recently played live at the Unique Beats Festival 2010 in Edinburgh as rec72 netlabel mates Pandacetamol did in 2009.

Shiver Me Timbres – Pandacetamol

Shiver Me Timbres by Pandacetamol is a pure manifesto of sophisticated Electronica that sounds like Scottish pioneering electronic music from the 1990’s beamed up to the present time. The current Pandacetamol album delivers 50 minutes of gloomy downtempo doodlings, where The Black Dog goes snoopy and Plaid the cat is jumping on a hot tin roof.

The majority of Pandacetamol tracks are recorded in one take and then edited and polished as required.  They wholeheartedly believe that this method of capturing the musical “moments” as they happen when a jam is in process is an essential component in conjuring electronic music that has an organic atmosphere and emotional edge.  Dark but filled with hope, hypnotic but constantly morphing, opulent but sinister, their tracks are bite-sized journeys which together make up a full tasty meal of sound.  Each of their EPs and albums are carefully composed to be enjoyed as a whole.

“Shiver me Timbres was the result of some hazy jam sessions in Edinburgh throughout the summer of 2009, (a GOOD summer!).  It is laced with indefinable feelings of nostalgia, joy, melancholy and a healthy dash of disquiet.”

Biography Pandacetamol

Pandacetamol are Paul Alexander and Mark Rushbury, a pair of bald blokes who originally hail from Glasgow in Scotland.  They possess a genuine passion for sound and synthesis and love jamming on their bargain vintage analogue synths and shiny grooveboxes.  The result of these jams are musical doodlings that are ethereal, dark, funky, beautiful and strange all at once.

Previous exploits in Pandacetamol noise-sharing have included three albums released on the wonderful experimental ambient netlabel Earth Monkey Productions.  Unleashed to the public throughout 2008 and 2009, the albums  “Heavy Concentration”, “The Mystery of Spyglass Hill” and “Nocturnal” have gathered over 6000 downloads between them to date and are all still available for free on the internet archive.

Pandacetamol - Live action shot at Unique beats

Thanks to a love of early nineties psychedelic acid music, (especially the other-worldly sounds created by Air Liquide, Dr Walker, Khan, Thomas Heckmann etc), a friendship was formed with Dr Walker through the We Call it Acid forum in 2007.  After a few tracks were shared, Pandacetamol were invited to play a live gig alongside Dr Walker at the ArtTheater Cologne in March 2008.  This led to a Pandacetamol DIGIrelease through the cult Cologne label Propulsion285 called the “Hazy Gaze EP” which contains 5 tracks of funky and intense acid breaks for sheer listening pleasure.

More recently, an album comprised of a live set recorded during an appearance at the  UniqueBeats event for the Edinburgh Festival in August 2009 was released and a Pandacetamol remix of the track Special K by Radio Scotvoid (Scott Buchannan of Small Radio) appeared on the amazing album Fragment (Consider Revising) Special K Edition 2010.

U.G.L.Y. is here for you crowds licking for some New Plastic Soul by one and only Berlin Asphaltgöre: Zoe.LeelA!

The new mono single U.G.L.Y. is a bas(s)tard, a mix of UK sprung Jungle, a clever play between ugly tuff beats, and some heavy guitars; pouring down on Zoe.LeelA’s instinctiveness and voice. Forget about vulcano stories you might have heard: U.G.L.Y.  is a stunner.

Zoe.LeelA’s performance on her new mono single U.G.L.Y. is pushing the limits of pop and glamour being punched with some punk on the dancefloor,  as the German Press coined her own style and genre.

Soft Shapes – nisei23

nisei23’s album Soft Shapes is an overture of Drone-driven and melodic textures & rhythmic loops at the same time. It is product of over 3 years of work. nisei23’s music on this album is designed to be amorphous, shifting through time and space. Soft Shapes contains 19 Tracks, including extensive cover arts and release credits.

“It’s like a dream where everything is familiar but everything is different”, he confesses. The sounds on his album were carefully constructed from acoustic instruments and natural sounds which were manipulated and molded into drones, rhythmical loops and melodic patterns. The only exception was “Don’t Panic” which is entirely electronic. The melodies themselves are equally unconventional, sometimes with slow and subtle movements and other times making dramatic and unexpected twists.

“I don’t usually talk about my musical influences but while making this album I was listening to Can, My Bloody Valentine, Brian Eno, Miles Davis, Slowdive and Erik Satie and after much debate decided to include my version of Gymnopedie 1. There are also many non musical influences but that’s something I won’t divulge.” (nisei23, march 2010)

Sparkling G! by yan_g

Sparkling G! is the latest album by French-based artist yan_g pouring down the genres Jazz and abstract Electronica into a coherent and universal music stream.

Album cover Sparkling_G! by yan_GHis own reflections on Sparkling G! album: „It is not a concept album”, there is no idea behind the music, there is no thinking involved! „I tried, as in most of my music, to put as much soul in it as I can. I always try to tell something coherent, realistic, even if I have no idea what it is.“ The major point of his music is to tell what can’t be told in words, to express what wants to come out, with very little control. „I would say that the only conscious input during my music making process is the attempt to make it musically universal; to give it a certain coherence. I make sure each track is meaningful to me, with the hope that it’ll be meaningful to someone else, too.“

Analyzing his own music and creation process, yan_g considers the lower frequencies as dark, and the higher as bright. „Which, I guess is universal because on many audio devices the boosting of high frequencies is called brightness.“ The sparkles he mentions in the title refer to that. yan_G tries to sculpt stars with the high frequencies, above a beautiful landscape made of bass and mids. Bright details that sparkle in your ear.

Besides the most obvious Plaid and  Squarepusher (Warp), yan_g’s major influences are Freeform (Skam) for the production and composition, Leila (Rephlex) for the soul, and LRAB (Audio Aubergine…) for the bright moments.

He started composing music when he was a teenager, on Atari ST using Protracker, then stumbled upon guitar music, and returned to Electronica. Net control by Monopole

Cover from Monopole's Net controlNet control is the latest concept album by artist Monopole (a.k.a. Richard Sudney). The whole idea of this album was taken from the natural occurrence of electromagnetic wave propagating through the ether. Like the waves being generated on the waters surface from a stone being thrown into it; this album takes these wave disturbances and mimics it over 6 tracks.

The material used in this album are hand crafted by Richard Sudney. Field recordings that were used, contained various samples of shortwave broadcasts of data transmissions , others are from vintage reel to reel tape recordings from the 1950’s of radio transmissions. A home made audio possessor was used along with a $30 key board synthesizer, and hundreds of pain stakingly put to gather micro samples. All of which made “Net control” a crafty album.

About Monopole (Richard Sudney)
Richard Sudney was born in Detroit in 1978. As naturally curious individual he was drawn towards electronics and shortwave radio at an early age. It wasn’t until his late 20s and early 30s during college when he amid his curiosity to netlableism. “In a media like the internet where free thinking is the material of it’s construction, it’s a no brainier that netlableism exists in it”(Richard Sudney 2009). In 2005 Richard Sudney (a.k.a. Monopole) started creating simple melodies on his computer by ways of using software based oscillators. As time went on, Monopole a self tough musician, got a hold of a children’s keyboard synthesizer at a flea market. At this time, being a student in college studying electronics, it was natural for Richard to make electronic devices, so he set out to make a audio processor which is to accompany that $30 key board. This processor can be heard in many of his compilations. At the present time Monopole is growing away from cheap synthesizers and leaning too sounds of short wave and field recordings made by him with a homemade field recording apparatus. “Micro samples of field recording that I made while roaming around abandon factory’s and houses in the Detroit area, are the next level of electronic music after the synthesizer and processor. It gives the impression of lofi but still maintains the electronic feel.”

Dreameresque view on Europa by Kurobear

Cover Europa by KurobearCelebrate the 3rd full length album from Kurobear with his brand new album called “Europa”. Kurobear – formally known as Kid Caustic – has put together nine electro melodic and catchy tunes on “Europa” reflecting his physical and mental constitution when he was seriously ill in 2009. We don’t go into further details now, but be sure to listen to Kurobear’s musical answers on dreamy trips of  “Europa”.  So he presents a nifty album trying to recreate the feeling of “sleep and just being in a whole different state of consciousness”, as Kurobear describes his age of insomnia at the beginning of the year.

Kurobear says: “The album title came to me when I was really sick in a dream, in about march I got really and was sleeping about 23 hours a day, only to wake up and see if I could move at all but whenever I did try to move or be active, it made it worse.”

When he was writing “Europa” afterwards he took a lot of ideas from groups like The Orb and psychedelic music from the 60’s as well as jam band stuff, taking all those different influences and putting them together; and trying to make them work while still being able to pick out the different sounds, so it doesn’t sound like a mash of different things.

Phopha’s Cities album

Cover Cities by PhophaBigger cities in western hemisphere are known as vivid and inspiring locations to express yourself. But they also stand for the many unbearable and frosty places in means of social connectivity and dislocation.
This is what Phopha experienced when he went on to study in two different places: “I was feeling down and all those new people were maybe too much for me”, he says and decided to relocate to a smaller town (rather village) to stop his studies and continue his life by selling music instruments.

But some really weird visions on those cities remained and he saw himself wandering through the places over and over again. So the easiest way to get rid off those nightmares, Phopha started making music about the “traumatic” spots (which have fictional names on the album that correspond some of the memories): “That’s why sometimes the songs may sound unfinished but that’s really it, that’s what I was then, fortunately  it is all over though.”

Richard Elis aka. Phopha from Czech Republic presents his debut album “Cities” on rec72 containing 9 songs covering the genres downtempo, shoe-gaze and trip-hop music.
The track “Vibe City” contains vocals by US hiphop act Forensic.

deef – Eine ganz normale Woche im Paralleluniversum

Cover to Eine ganz normale Woche im Paralleluniversum by deefImagine the following: You are able to experience an ordinary week in your own parallel unviverse, shift phase from alter ego to alter ego and find the many worlds you visit on your trip similar but also different compared to what you get to know in your universal life.

This is what deef’s current album “Eine ganz normale Woche im Paralleluniversum” is heading for. His album is considered to be an acoustic “Gedankenexperiment”: You are the visitor and protagonist at the same time. The moment you start listening to “Eine ganz normale Woche im Paralleluniversum” your temporal and spatial journey begins; and you will wander through the various universes that co-exist in any single track from the album.
Each track stands for the many parallel and individual universes.

Sometimes it’s obvious in one track that you slide from universe to universe. Another time it’s not to so clear and at the end of your musical trip you might have recognized the shift in space and time. The environment you find yourself toggles within one track; so keep an ear on it and enjoy the hyper unknown.

Basically German crowds say Germany doesn’t bear any new experimental and contemporary modern electronic music artist sending outstanding tunes through the aether! Well, folks it seems you haven’t noticed that we already have such an artist amongst us for more than a year! With his current album “Eine ganz normale Woche im Paralleluniversum” rec72 celebrates the second full length album by deef and we are proud to present Germany’s all time Electronica artists number one.

There is no such thing! As deef enhances his extravaganza with selected field recordings taken from the various spots he visited during the past year – since he has released his first album “Lebensbegleitende Musik” in 2008 on our label. His new album “Eine ganz normale Woche im Paralleluniversum” includes 8 extraordinary ambient and downtempo tracks; delivering an atmosphere which we normally expect from experimental music composers or rather find in psychedelic movies produced by David Lynch.

Travel through deef’s hypermusical universe for free. No worries you will return safe and sound to the correct time and space you started from!

Of Men And Machines – A netlabel Co-Compilation

“Of Men And Machines” is an hommage to the relationship between machines and mankind. This compilation  is considered to be a tribute to the perfect symbiosis men and machines can reach.  Since the appearance of machines, they’ve been closely linked to the concept of progress. Every generation of machines is more perfect and mankind benefits from this evolution. “Of Men And Machines” demonstrates that creativity of human beings is multiplied exponentially with machines – no question.

18 artists from around the world expound their personal relationship between machines and themselves to produce emotions and sounds. Thus the netlabels Audiovisual Theorem and rec72 employ the same relationship to approach the infinite possibilities and collaborate in a compilation that travels through a variety of music styles. Expect IDM all over the place, dance to Dubstep, chill with Triphop, make yourself comfortable with minimal house and let experimental Electronica run through your headphones.

Audiovisual Theorem and rec72 Netlabel are really psyched about this release! To host those gifted and enthusiastic artists from all over the world. It is an overwhelming collection of innovative music including diverse genres. We are sure that this co-compilation will become a corner stone in Creative Commons music and collaboration, too as it is and was a great challenge to combine the output of so many artists and to melt it into one electronic and organic rock. Le Migre is a dense package of multi-genre-crossing music and one won’t get rid off guitars on that debut EP, too! If you are into smart Electronica adapting the sound from two guitar heroes, than go ahead with those four tracks on Le Migre EP by Small Radio:

Convince yourself by entering the „2K Summer House“ which is dominated by tough forward / backward guitar riffs and loops by Colin combined with Scott’s heavy Big Beat machinery here! „By any means“ we are already talking about track number #3 of Le Migre: Buzzing bass lines – last heard in some 80’s video games – are fighting some snare wars with Mister Tambourine Man. Sorry, we are almost through Le Migre and „I Am Ricky Richardo“ will tell you a thrilling story about his career as vice detective Miami Magnum. Some people heard „horses’ hooves in there as well“.

Small Radio is a collaborative project by Scott Buchanan aka. Radio Scotvoid and Colin Sweeney aka. Small Colin, two Scotsmen being abroad from Scotland. One is living in the U.S.; the other one in Sweden. The songs on Le Migre EP have been produced over the last two years. Scott did two tracks, and so did Colin; then each of them enhanced it with his own style and precision. You can read about their musical odyssee and the ups and down while getting the show on the road in Colin’s annotations on the project Small Radio:

After a short period of general apathy we began in earnest what was to become ”Le Migre”. A few riffs and parts were sent back an forth, (just to test the water you know?). Then an literal eon went past before the lads in question decided, ”wait a damn minute………this shit ain’t too bad after all”.This is where the magic started to happen. Small Colin played some melody. Radio Scotvoid messed up some beats.

Hell, some random named Jeff ”12 string” Murray even added some guitar. This process was bounced across the Atlantic a few times (at least) in the next few months until both of these former Bravehearts were happy. To be honest we weren’t but like the legend that is Mr G. Lucas said, ”projects are only abandoned, never completed”.

At this point the lads decided enough is enough. The cry was heard over continents, or at least Facebook. So it brings us to today. Four tracks are presented and fifteen-thousand tracks were neglected. Although many an artist knows, that’s how it goes in this game. Radio Scotvoid & Small Colin proudly announce their first collaboration as Small Radio and their Le Migre EP.

Are you wandering unsystematically from music blog to community, from myspace to jamendo and backwards to last.fm? But you never met an album which combined all your favourite tracks from your beloved music acts? Then let Bitbasic simply introduce you “Leonard”, a musical aid kit for the moments of your life in which you lack melodic electronica. 12 tracks that cover almost any style and mood that music can deliver so far.  For those of you that need a musical analogy:  Expect a bunch of tunes on BitBasic’s Leonard that remind you on acts like AFX, Ulrich Schnauss, Air, Two Loneswordsmen and Steve Reich – no kidding!!!

BitBasic is London-based electronica artist Simon Haycock. His debut album “Leonard ” on rec72 was entirely produced in one month. “As part of the RPM Challenge, where participant musicians are challenged to try and make an album of at least 35 minutes (or 10 tracks) of music”, Simon says. You shouldn’t miss those bright moments of ambient, IDM and shoegaze on one album!
